In 1855, a slave named Celia, was arrested, convicted, and hung for the murder of her "legal owner" Robert Newsom. Her trial and execution captured the hearts of people on both sides of the Atlantic and was instrumental in bringing an end to the practice of slavery. Brought to the stage for the first time, this true story unmasks the real face of slavery using the letters and personal accounts of those who endured. It reveals an educated and incredibly resourceful community, committed to family and most importantly their freedom.
